Training Programs Sponsored by Volunteer Lawyers Project

Volunteer Lawyers Project (VLP) offers training in Family Law, Bankruptcy Law, Social Security (SSI), Landlord/Tenant Law, Unemployment Law, and Guardianship of Adults throughout the year. The training programs and materials are FREE as are all materials provided, contingent upon a participant's agreement to accept at least one pro bono case from VLP within three months of the training. Training facilitators will bring available cases to each training. If the participant is unable to accept a case within three months of the training the participant agrees that VLP will bill him/her $100.00 for the cost of the training and materials.

In addition, VLP offers vouchers for panel attorneys who would like to take any one day course at MCLE for only $25.00, and courses offered at the BBA. To register for an MCLE training, please contact MCLE directly. To request a voucher through VLP, please contact JRubin-Wills@vlpnet.org.

How to Prepare a Bankruptcy

If you are new to representing bankruptcy clients, this is the training for you! You will learn to prepare and electronically file petitions, schedules, and creditor matrices. Together, we will use VLP's BestCase software to prepare a sample case, discussing some practice tips along the way.

Prerequisite: An introductory bankruptcy course (like the one MCLE is holding Taunton on June 17, 2008). VLP will provide lunch and a copy of the National Consumer Law Center's Bankruptcy Basics book.

Family Law 102

A more in-depth training in Domestic Relations Law. This training will cover Temporary Orders, Pre-Trial Conferences, and how to finalize a divorce or other family law matter.

Family Law 101

An introductory training on Domestic Relations Law. This one session training will give you the basics on initiating a divorce. It will cover filing the Complaint and all the accompanying documents, and serving the opposing party.

Introduction to Guardianship of Minors

This nuts and bolts training will cover all areas of handling an uncontested guardianship of a minor petition. The training will discuss the legal issues of jurisdiction and venue, completion and filing of a petition, assents, service issues, temporary and permanent guardianship, bond requirements and filing of an inventory. Guardianships are simple. This is a great area of law for new practitioners who would like experience in the Probate Courts, as well as an interesting area of law for family law practitioners who have not previously handled a guardianship of minor petition.
