Unemployment Insurance Appeals. VLP receives more than 200 unemployment insurance cases a year, with that number increasing because of the rise of the unemployment rate. Our volunteers represent workers who have been denied Unemployment benefits in administrative appeals at the Division of Unemployment Assistance. If you're interested in taking an unemployment case, please don't hesitate to contact us. We offer training, mentoring support and malpractice insurance coverage. Student volunteers are needed at the Suffolk Probate and Family Court Courtroom Lawyer for the Day Project run by VLP and Senior Partners for Justice on Friday mornings. At the Probate and Family Court, law students at the help the attorneys with cases, screen clients for eligibility for legal services, do brief initial client interviews to get basic information about their case, and help clients fill out guardianship petitions. VLP and Senior Partners recently started a similar Guardianship Assistance Project in the Middlesex County Probate and Family Court in Cambridge on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Law student volunteers are needed to assist unrepresented petitioners fill out the pleadings for and file guardianship of minor petitions. This is an interesting, time-limited pro bono opportunity for law students and law graduates awaiting bar results. The courthouse is a 5 minute walk from the Lechmere T stop on the Green Line. Senior Partners for Justice Public Service Internship in the Probate & Family Courts. Interns are placed in the Suffolk, Middlesex, and Norfolk County Probate and Family Courts, working directly alongside courthouse staff. This is a great behind-the-scenes experience for law students interested in family law. The internship runs in the Fall, Spring and Summer semesters.
