Debt Relief/Bankruptcy Clinics

Debt Relief/Bankruptcy Clinics

The third Tuesday of every month, alternating between

 VLP's Offices at 7 Winthrop Sq, Floor 2, Boston MA from 10am - 12pm

Dorchester House at 1353 Dorchester Ave, Dorchester MA from 4 - 6pm

VLP is looking for volunteer attorneys, paralegals and law students to staff bankruptcy clinics. Some of VLP's most vulnerable clients have a difficult time applying for bankruptcy assistance because of the amount of information and paperwork required to complete their file. VLP holds a bankruptcy clinic once a month to assist low-income clients with the process of completing our application and gathering the required documents.

Volunteers only provide Limited Assistance Representation (LAR). Your job is to provide legal information about bankruptcy and filing. Your commitment to the client does not extend past the clinic. To learn more about LAR, click here.

How It Works
Volunteers at bankruptcy clinics have a few options of how to participate in bankruptcy clinics. Attorneys can:
     • Give a short presentation on bankruptcy and answer questions from client attendees
     • Meet with a client to determine what documents are needed to complete their file
     • Try to gather those documents online.  Some examples of the documents needed are credit reports, income or benefit information, asset information and tax returns.

Benefits of Volunteering

     • Limited assistance means you finish with your client on the same day. No drawn-out help with court proceedings or legal advice.
    • Attorneys of all experience volunteer. Learn from a more experienced attorney if you would like more guidance on guardianship law and paperwork, or provide mentorship to a younger attorney if you have years of knowledge to share.
    • Networking. Want to meet other attorneys in your area of practice? Clinics are a great way to make connections with other legal professionals.
    • Gain practical experience. This clinic is a great introduction to bankruptcy practice for volunteers.

The Volunteer Lawyers Project provides primary malpractice insurance for all pro bono work.
