Administrative/Paralegal Support

Summary of Position:
The Volunteer Lawyers Project of the Boston Bar Association is seeking volunteers to provide support to our programs. Candidates will demonstrate compassion and ability to work with low-income populations from diverse backgrounds. Volunteers will provide important and crucial support to the work of the staff at both locations and aid to continue our mission.

Qualifications:
• Professional experience (preferably in an office setting)
• Fluency in another language preferred but not required (Spanish, Portuguese, Creole, Vietnamese, Cantonese, and/or Mandarin)

Education/Training:
• Enrolled in or completed a degree and/or paralegal studies program

Physical Abilities:
• Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time
• Ability to navigate and travel on public transportation
• Ability to deal with client’s experiencing high stress and anxiety resulting from their legal issues

Essential Job Functions:
• Develop a basic understand of the organization and office protocol
• Answer phone calls and greet walk-ins
• Direct phone calls and walk-ins to the proper staff and/or provide information and resources
• Provide support to administrative assistants with daily front-end office operations
• Provide support to paralegals/legal advocates with case management and clinic screening
• Prepare materials for trainings, meetings, and/or legal clinics
• Provide support for special projects and other tasks as needed
• Assist with interpreting and translation of documents as needed
• Attend meetings (staff, case review, admin, and/or committee)

Requirements:

• Ability to work a minimum of 12-16 hours per week
• Ability to work independently and also collaborate with other colleagues
• Ability to stay on task, remain organized, and meet deadlines
• Professional communication skills both oral and written
• Attention to detail and ability to problem solve
• Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize, and meet deadlines
• Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
• Ability to take initiative and ask questions
• Ability to navigate through the internet, research, and locate information
