Family Law and Guardianship Unit
Interns in this unit conduct client intakes and assist clients with legal issues related to Family Law and Guardianship. Interns help staff VLP’s Guardianship and Family Law Clinics, follow up with existing VLP clients, and assist with other projects as needed.
At court clinics, interns screen and assist clients with various family law and guardianship-related issues. Court clinics provide wonderful opportunities for interns to shadow and network with practicing attorneys of all experience levels. Interns have many opportunities for client interaction at the clinics.
Family Law Clinic
VLP operates a Family Law Clinic in the Suffolk County Probate and Family Court. Law student volunteers assist clients with various family law-related issues, including divorces, paternity issues, child support orders, custody and visitation issues, and modifications. This is an interesting, time-limited pro bono opportunity for law students and law graduates awaiting bar results.
Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Court Service Center on the 2nd Floor of the Brooke Courthouse.
We ask that students interested in volunteering for the Family Law Clinic first attend VLP’s Family Law 101 and Family Law 102 trainings. See www.vlpnet.org for more information on upcoming trainings.
VLP and Senior Partners operate Guardianship Clinics in the Suffolk, Middlesex and Norfolk County Probate and Family Courts. Law student volunteers assist unrepresented petitioners in filling out the pleadings for and filing for guardianship of minor petitions.
