Wage theft and worker exploitation is rising in Massachusetts.  The Volunteer Lawyers Project is excited to announce its partnership with the Attorney General Office, Fair Labor Division, and various community partners* to combat wage theft and worker exploitation through a Wage Theft Clinic.  These monthly clinics will provide much-needed assistance to aggrieved workers by providing workers with limited legal consultation and education and outreach related to workers’ rights law.  VLP will also screen wage and hour cases at the clinics to refer out to our employment panel for full representation.

Volunteer Opportunities

Wage Theft Clinic
Attorneys provide limited legal consultation for workers who have been issued a private right of action letter by the AGO.  This is a great bite-sized pro bono opportunity for those with limited time commitments as well as for newer employment attorneys not yet ready to take a full representation case.  VLP Staff will be present at the clinic to provide support for our volunteers.

Full Representation Referrals for Wage and Hour Cases

Wage and hour cases will be screened at the Wage Theft Clinic and made available to our employment panel for full representation.  VLP attorneys taking pro bono wage and hour cases are permitted to recover statutory attorney’s fees.

Mentoring
Experienced employment attorneys can volunteer as a mentor to assist new employment attorneys in their wage and hour case.

Qualification:  Attorneys participating in the clinic must be qualified by VLP.  Qualification will include attendance at a wage and hour training held by either the AGO or VLP or significant experience in wage and hour law.

Wage and Hour training that satisfies the above requirement are given by Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education. VLP has reduced fee vouchers for its volunteers if they would like to assist at the clinic. Contact VLP's referral coordinator, Adrian Coss, at acoss@vlpnet.org for information about the vouchers.
